When hosting a web server or running a local area network that also connects to the internet a DNS server is needed. In many cases the Internet Service Provider will provide a DNS serer that you can use while surfing the net. Sometimes when you want to run a web server, providing your own DNS server is needed. This is when DNS server hosting is needed. Many DNS servers are run on computers using Linux as the Operating System since there are many free applications available to allow someone to offer Linux DNS server hosting on their web server.
When creating a DNS server on Linux there are many applications that can be used. Some of them are free while others are not. One of the most widely used DNS applications is BIND. It is considered to be the de facto standard for all UNIX-like operating systems including Linux. Many server hosting companies that use Linux or any other UNIX-like operating system for their dedicated servers will most likely use BIND.
When running a web server a dedicated DNS server is also required. One option would be to install BIND or any other DNS server application if your web server is using Linux. This will allow you to provide your own DNS server hosting, but you will also be in charge of keeping the DNS server updated and running yourself. This can require a lot of work to keep the DNS server up and running properly.
If providing your own DNS host is not a feasible option then another option is for dedicated server hosting. Many dedicated server hosting companies do offer DNS dedicated servers. Most of these dedicated DNS servers are running Linux which allows for easier remote administration of the dedicated server. Also since BIND is considered a de facto standard of Linux, it would be rare to see a DNS server application other than BIND in use on the dedicated server. Another advantage to using a dedicated DNS server is that some of the bandwidth is distributed to a remote server allowing for more resources to be available on the web server.
